One award to be made

Purpose of the Fellowship
The Fellowship provides a salary to enable a trainee anaesthetist to spend a period of no longer than two years carrying out research. Applications should be submitted by departments or institutions (with a named supervisor) for a well defined programme of work by a named individual leading towards a PhD or MD degree. In addition, details of research training during the fellowship should be described.

Salary
The salary will be at the appropriate point on the NHS scale. The costs of the trainees basic salary, including National Insurance and superannuation will be met.

Running costs
From 2010 applicants will also be able to apply for up to £10,000 per annum (£20,000 in total) to cover running costs. Requests will need to be fully justified and applicants are advised that assessors will be asked to comment on the costing of the application. AAGBI/Anaesthesia decline to cover requests for attendance at scientific meetings.

Requirements for the department The department should be equipped adequately to accommodate the Research Fellow and to allow the work specified in the proposal to be performed. Evidence should be provided to show that the work will lead to a PhD or MD.

Application
Application should be made by an anaesthetic department on behalf of the potential research fellow. Applications should be typed on A4 paper using one side of the paper only. The following information is required:

1. a full curriculum vitae of the applicant
2. the name, professional address and telephone number of the department and of the person responsible for supervising the Fellow (if different), who should be a member of the Association
3. an abstract of the proposed research (not more than 200 words)
4. a structured lay abstract of the proposed research (not more than 500 words)
5. background to the research (not more than 350 words)
6. an outline plan of the investigation or investigations proposed (1500 - 2000 words). This should include mention of any specialised methods of measurement and a statement (not exceeding 200 words) explaining why the department or institution is particularly suited to undertake the type of work proposed. This should also include a statement of statistical considerations including a power analysis where appropriate
7. list of previous publications from the department related to the work proposed
8. a letter from the bursar, finance officer or similar person from the institution concerned indicating willingness to administer the funds in the event of an award being made
9. confirmation that the proposed project has been approved by the local ethics committee or animal license obtained
10. detailed plan for the duration of the fellowship including research training
11. arrangements with respect to obtaining a PhD or MD

Award of grant
Applications will be considered by the Research Council of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia after a rigorous peer review process.

Reports A brief interim report of approximately 1000 words should be submitted at the end of the first year and a full report within one month of completion of the Fellowship. Any publication or presentation should contain a statement to the effect that the Fellow was supported by the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia and Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.
