Project Grant 2008 (funded by the RCoA/BJA)
Closing date: Noon on Friday, 25 July 2008
Aim
The grants are intended to support specific research projects performed by a Fellow of the Royal College (irrespective of geographical location) or a UK based non-clinician involved in Anaesthesia, Critical Care or Pain Management; and may be for the salaries of technical staff, research students and postdoctoral research fellows or for the purchase of items of equipment. We will not be considering applications for PhD studentship funding this round.
The Research Project
Preference will be given to projects that involve the application of basic science to Anaesthesia, Critical Care or Pain Management but clinical research projects will also be considered. The work may be done in a university science department or in an academic clinical department, but preference will be given to projects involving co-operative research between a basic-science department and a clinical department. It is hoped that applications will be dealt with within 3-4 months of the closing date. To facilitate this, applicants are asked to give the names, addresses (and if known e-mail addresses) of TWO INDEPENDENT REFEREES IN THE SAME AREA OF RESEARCH to whom the Research Committee might refer. These should be appended on a SEPARATE sheet of the application.
The support
The award will normally not exceed £50,000 for salaries (including Superannuation and National Insurance contributions; the BJA and RCoA decline to contribute to any other indirect costs), equipment (including VAT) and running costs. If a case can be made (e.g., where a clinical appointment is essential) then the BJA/RCoA will consider funding to a maximum of £65,000. The BJA/RCoA also ask applicants to note that the two bodies will wish to share any intellectual property rights and income arising from this work with the host institution.
Eligibility
In addition to satisfying the criteria set out in the AIMS section, applicants must be established members of Academic Departments of Anaesthetics, Critical Care and/or Pain Management or NHS (or non-UK equivalent) Departments of Anaesthesia, Critical Care and/or Pain Management. The grant must be administered by one of these Departments and have the support of the head of that Department. BJA/RCoA decline to process projects currently submitted elsewhere.
