NELA e-Newsletter - 32nd Edition December 2016

Welcome to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit's e-Newsletter.

Patient Data Collection

Year 3 of the patient audit data collection period ended on 30th November 2016. The deadline for entering, completing and locking all Year 3 cases is Friday 20th January 2017. This gives sites time to ensure that all patients who qualify within the inclusion criteria, and who have been admitted on or before 30 November 2016, are entered and locked within the web tool. All cases that are not locked (or "incomplete") after this date, will unfortunately not be included within the analysis and will go to waste.

As the 20th January 2017 deadline is quickly approaching, over the next few weeks, please go through your hospital's incomplete cases and complete and lock as many of them as possible. This is especially important if you have been rated as an Amber or Red during the last Hospital Progress Report. If you are struggling to meet your case ascertainment figures, please get in touch with us as we can share "top tips" on how to find uncaptured cases within your hospital.

The Project Team are pleased with the ongoing hospital participation and would like to thank everyone within your team for their contribution and hard work within the Audit

Year 4 Patient Audit

Data collection period for Year 4 started on 1st December 2016 and continuing on until 30th November 2017. We have appreciated your feedback on the burden of data entry, and have tried to lessen that burden by modifying the questions within the Year 4 Patient Audit Proforma.

Please be aware that if you are using a paper copy of the Proforma and entering cases retrospectively, there is overlap between Year 3 and Year 4 and the Proformas are different. It will be important to highlight this to your team and to use the correct version when collecting data.

If you enter cases directly onto the web tool, the web tool will adjust automatically between Year 3 and Year 4, based on when the patient was admitted.

A copy of the Year 4 Proforma is available on the web tool, under "Support." You can also find it here.

Quality Improvement

Based on your feedback, we have put together a series of short videos highlighting ways to locally disseminate NELA data and improve patient outcomes. Our first video, "NELA: Improving Data Feedback" has just been published and can be found here.

Regional Workshops

The NELA project team will be looking to run some Regional Quality Improvement Workshops in 2017.

The aim would be to work with local sites to run these for a particular region to assist individuals on how to use audit data to carry out Quality Improvement work locally and ultimately improve patient care and outcomes.

NELA would assist with resources, providing an outline for the event and with speakers. The intention is that these workshops will be free for delegates to attend and NELA would cover speaker expenses.

What we would require is for you to help run the event locally, find a suitable location and then liaise with the NELA team to advertise and run the event.
We are currently looking for volunteers who wish to take advantage of this opportunity to run a Local NELA Quality Improvement Event in 2017
